US Grappling CHAMPS !!!

Team Vicente Jr., and BJJ Conquest had a dominating performance at the 2011 Maryland US Grappling tournament on August 13th, 2011. We had over 20 students compete and as a team came home with over 50 medals, most of which were gold. Team Vicente Jr. placed first as a team and BJJ Conquest placed first as a school, beating out multiple local, larger, and established schools. Congratulations to everyone from the team, both those who competed and those who put the hours in preparing and training.

This is only the beginning. First, The Good Fight, now US Grappling, and many more to follow in the coming months. We are the fastest growing school/team in the area. Now it's back to the mat to prepare for our October events.

FFC Affiliate Students Promotion.

Congratulations!! To Matt and Ken from Frederick Fight Club for their well deserved promotion to Brown Belt on Saturday July 23rd. Professor Vicente Junior put the guys through a tough workout as usual and both lived up to the challenge showing they were more than ready to move on to the next level. The test concluded with some very nice words from both students that we all appreciated. Special thanks to Gil, Jay, and Nate for making the drive to support the test.

Belt Promotions!

On Sunday, July 17th, we had our first belt promotion since Professor Vicente Junior relocated to Maryland and made BJJ Conquest his headquarters location. The test went great and consisted of an hour and a half of non-stop, fast paced rolling, followed by a question and answer period for the students testing. All those who tested proved, without doubt, they were ready to promote.

CONGRATS to new BJJ Blue Belts, Jay, Jake, Brian, Adam M., Adam Z, Mike, Mindy, and Sean.

Vicente Jr. also surprised owners/instructors Lance Trippett and Kail Bosque with a long awaited and well deserved promotion to Brown Belt. Congratulations to both!

Special thanks to all students from BJJ Conquest and affiliated schools who were there to support and train with all those testing. "Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work. ~Vince Lombardi

Conquest makes the paper !!!

BJJ Conquest was featured in The Capital on July 12th, 2011. They wrote a great profile article on Nate, focusing on what being an MMA fighter and instructor mean to him. Check it out at http://www.hometownannapolis.com/news/top/2011/07/12-24/Fort-Meade-lieutenant-doubles-as-cage-fighter.html.

Don't forget, belt test this Sunday, July 17th during open mat; come by to support your teammates, and get in a good roll. Also, keep training hard for the US Grappling tournament on August 13th. We're hoping for a repeat, dominating, 1st place finish, so whether you're competing or not, we need you on the mat.

Awesome weekend of fights!

This past weekend there were some amazing fights, and I am not talking about the Strikeforce fights on showtime. I am talking about the fights held in Winchester VA. The evening of fights was put on by Onslaught Fights, the event was appropriately named Art of War. Conquest had two fighters putting it on the line that evening. The first Conquest member to step in the cage that night was Adam McClure. Adam was making his MMA debut at 135 lbs. Adam came out in the first round showing amazing striking skills and take down defense. Had his opponent out on his feet near the end of the round. Missing the last two punches his opponent composed him self and survived the first round. Going in to the second and third round it was an absolute back and forth war! Adam stayed in there toughed it out but ended up losing by decision. We are very proud of Adam, and with only training under a year and being so young we are sure he has a bright future ahead of him.

The next and final Conquest fighter of the night was Nate Grebb. This was Nate's 9th MMA fight and the experience showed. Going in to the cage Nate looked calm and ready to handle business. Nate opened the fight up with a quick leg kick and then defended a tight take down attempt. Nate quickly made space and let his hands go! It almost seemed that every punch thrown was landed with bad intentions. Losing the fight standing up Nate's opponent attempted another take down. This one ended up successful, but with Nate's increasingly growing skill on the ground he quickly defended the position and used a half guard sweep to come on top. Throwing fist and dropping elbows from the top position Nate's opponent desperately tried to scramble out. After a couple hard hits he was able to escape but to only find himself once again on the receiving end of Nate's feet and fist! Nate landed some great combinations and then a hard hitting head kick that sent his opponent running. Nate followed through with his attack until the ref stepped in and stopped the fight in the middle of the first round. This was by far Nate's best performance in the cage setting his MMA record to now 6 and 3. With all the cage time and experience expect Nate Grebb to be getting another title shot very soon, then turning pro with in the next year.

Stay tuned for more Conquest News with more MMA fight happening July 9th and some major BJJ tournaments coming up!

Kail's UFC 129 fight predictions!

UFC 129 Predictions

Welcome to the first of many Kail’s Fight Predictions!

So from now on I will be posting my predictions for most major MMA events the week of the fights. Today’s predictions are for the highly anticipated UFC 129 with the headlining fight GSP vs. Jake Shields. Also on the card—the co-main event: Jose Aldo defending his UFC 145 belt for the first time against Mark Hominick. And returning to the octagon possibly for the last time is “Captain America” Randy Courture. He will be facing a dangerous opponent in Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida.

Starting off the night of televised fights will be the Spike Prelims:

Pierson vs. Ellenberger: Prediction = Ellenberger

Ellenberger should win this fight with his superior wrestling and heavy hands. I see him taking Pierson down and applying some vicious ground and pound. With Ellenberger’s great wrestling pedigree this fight shouldn’t be a problem for him.

Diaz vs. Macdonald: Prediction = Diaz

I’m picking Nate Diaz to win this fight. Nate’s awkward but effective striking combined with his great BJJ skill set is a tough match for any opponent.

UFC pay-per-view:

Bocek vs. Henderson: Prediction = Henderson

Coming off a highlight reel loss with a super kick to the face, I am sure Henderson is coming out to try to make a name for himself in the UFC. With his superior athleticism and experience in the cage, I have Henderson taking this fight.

Couture vs. Machida: Prediction = Machida

Unfortunately, I’m going to have to vote against Couture. As much as it pains me to say this—I think this one will be in favor of the ever elusive Dragon Lyoto Machida. With Machida’s speed, ability to strike, and skill in creating distance with ease I see Couture having a hard time executing his game plan of dirty boxing against the cage to obtain the takedown and ground a pound.

Matyushenko vs. Brilz: Prediction = Matyushenko

Aldo vs Hominick: Prediction = Aldo

This being Aldo’s first appearance in the UFC and first UFC title defense I see him coming out and putting on a clinic against Homminick. There are just not many areas that Homminick has a chance of beating Aldo at in this fight.

St. Pierre vs Shields: Predictions = St. Pierre

This fight should be a no brainer. St. Pierre is unstoppable at 170lbs. I agree that Shields will be his toughest match to date but still…Shields is not on the same level as GSP. In every aspect of the game GSP is far superior except for jiu jitsu, where he is only slightly superior. GSP’s ability to combine all aspects of the MMA game and stick to a game plan in each fight (usually just to put his opponent in the worse position possible) is the number one reason why GSP will win this fight and many more to come.

EFC 8

EFC 8 was a great event held in Lynchburg VA. It was a night packed with amazing fights. Two of those fights having Conquest members perform in. The night started of great for Conquest with the MMA debut of Tony "Baby St. Pierre" Dabbondanza vs. J. Pizpenk from team Hybrid. Tony went out and stuck to the game plan with crisp clean strikes and great timing for a take down to secure the victory via ref stoppage in the first round. Only just turning 16 Tony shows great potential in the sport and is sure to have a bright future ahead of him.

Following Tony's victory our next fighter was ready to go. Micah "see me" Terrill was featured in the main event for the 170lb title against opponent Lee Rahlein from team Hybrid. This fight earned fight of the night awards and was a vicious war that had the whole crowd on their feet. The first round had both fighters bloodied and battered going back to their corners. Going in to the second the war continued, unfortunately with Micah ending up in a submission near the end of the round. After the fight Micah accepted defeat graciously and said

"fight of the night and had never seen so much blood ... got caught in an arm lock end of 2 rd no excuses"

We are proud of our fighters and sure to see them back on the mats soon preparing for the next war. Look for Team Conquest to be showing up in tournaments near you. Next up is New York Open!

Only being 16 Tony shows amazing skill and devotion. Watch out for him in the future he may be the next big thing. Also on the card will be Micah Terrel, he will be going for his shot at the EFC 170lb title. This is Micahs third fight representing team Conquest.
